I have fitted a lot of wooden fire surrounds (in the late 70s early 80s they were very popular). I wouldn't think that these modern white lime surrounds are that much different. Cutting the back out of the surround for the gas fire closure plate was the worst part of doing those old jobs. Are you keeping the same gas fire aj?
In the early 70s people were having their old fireplace tiled surrounds taken out and plastered up and being replaced with just a gas fire fitted on the wall. The brickies would leave us a post box like hole in the wall for the flue from the new gas fire to fit into (the closure plate would be thrown away). I do remember a customer once in tears because we had used a restrictor elbow and chrome tube to connect up the gas fire. We had to go back and take it all out and then chop the copper pipe into the plaster in order that no pipes could be seen!
Life pre-Gasafe eh!!

Different gas fire. what size should the opening be? do I need to fit a lintel? do i need to alter the opening? A Gas Fire needs a Catchment Area formed in the Builders Opening. For larger Builders Opening a pre-fabricated catchment box can be used. Lots depends on the type of chimney & fire.

I wouldn't have thought so, if you have a gas fire fitted already the catchment area should be all there once the tiled surround is out. I used to chop all the plaster off so that the new surround could be fitted right up to the brickwork and screwed back to the brickwork and then made good with plaster around the edges. Asbestos rope would be placed around the catchment area sealing the surround onto the brickwork. Then you can cut out the catchment area with a jigsaw and seal the closure plate with gas-tape to the new surround in the normal way. You still had to do all the flue checks that we still do now and fit ventilation air bricks if required. As far as I can remember these were the C.O.R.G.I instructions (1980ish) at the time for fitting wooden tiled surrounds. Times have changed since then and as rocky says "look at the MIs" (which is the modern thing to say). It's always nice to have a little reminisce though from time to time into the Pre-Gasafe era !

I only said look at the mi’s as he’s got absolutely no clue how to go about it. Sounds like a job he should get someone in to me

If you're having to make a mess anyway, could you add some more sockets to the ring main ?

i don't understand diy dafty. Are you being funny? No, not at all. Could see you;'re in need of sockets and if you're pulling a fireplace out why not chase a box for a socket.
