Hi Guy's going to fit new cylinder over Easter Weekend and want to buy a new cylinder thermostat as the one on there although it works, is rather old but is very big compared to a Drayton or Honeywell but I am not an electrician so worried I will buy the wrong one and wire it up incorrectly please see attached Photo of what I currently have HELP Please.

A cylinder stat has 3 wires, They are all the same but the colours may vary, buy any you like using my criteria for purchasing anything, Get the best quality for the least amount of money, With the power off open the cyl stat and note the position of the colours where they go, there is a comm ( common), NO ( normally open) and NC ( normally closed) , swap the cylinder stat wires like for like,

It depends what control system is fitted. If it’s an S Plan, then only two connections are required. A Y Plan three connections are required.
Most Cylinder Thermostats will have 3 connections; C = Common NO = Normally Open NC = Normally Closed

Just been on Amazon and ordered 1-off these at a good price www.screwfix.com/p/honeywell-home-l641a-cylinder-stat/40051

For either systems, it’s only switched lives, so if you connect the wires the wrong way, the system will not work correctly.

" Y " Plan system Many thanks C = Common HW on(Programmer) 1 = NC Orange to MV, Sw/L to Boiler & Pump. 2 = NO Grey to MV & HW off(Programmer) So trace your conductors(wires)at the 10 Way junction box. When you select HW only on the Programmer & the Cylinder is cold = Common & 1 is live. When you select CH only, HW is off on the Programmer & the Cylinder is satisfied(very Hot) 2 only is Live. No point in just going by the colour of wires you have, check. The previous daft cunt could’ve got them wrong.

Asda, ‘Y’ plan controls wiring is the most difficult On/Off 240vac to wire & fault find on. The electronics in a Mid-Poss motorised Valve are complex for the hard of thinking. But that doesn’t mean you can just shit your pants & not learn about them!! If you have an auto range Multimeter, use it.

All sorted and now working as it did before ,,,,,,,After watching You tube Video which turned out to be a load of Rubbish for me
where it said perm live has to be fitted to Common Terminal which for me is all wrong ,,,,, then after reading Dick's last thread
where he says all depends what the last Fu*ker had done with the wiring ,,,,,,,So all I did was get a piece of paper and pen
and note down the 3 wire position and just move the wire positions until it worked and as it turned out for me Perm Live
has ended up on Terminal 2 wtf You Tube ........
Many thanks to all who replied to me
Regards

You'd be surprised at how many plumbers work things out exactly the way you've done Astra. To quote an old gaffer of mine "There's not really much to electrics as long as you keep the live and neutral wire apart"!
Mind you, he always struck me as being a bit dangerous with wiring in spite of him being a one time college lecturer.
This is around 1974 - 1978.
Look at how all this as changed into today's H&S in electrics.

Look at how all this as changed into today's H&S in electrics. It’s not just H&S. We’ve moved on so much from the old 240vac On/Off Systems, the Y & S plans are old hat. With modern Central Heating controls based on the ‘Bus’ automotive industry protocol. It’s never been so important to understand electronics in our industry, the changes & developments are so fast it’s breathtaking!!!
