Here’s Del’s very insightful look at Safe Isolation; It pays dividends to be careful and conscious of all the pitfalls he mentions, especially the auxilary items supplied from an alternative supply source not isolated when the main circuit is isolated. I find this pocket guide offers a simple and quick guide of how to achieve a safe system of work. Attachment Deleted

How Plumbers find the Studs in a partition wall. Studs are usually at 600 or 400mm centres, but finding them in a painted partition wall can be difficult.
So, we Plumbers rub two bits of steel wool together just above the surface of the wall. The magnetised bits of steel wool fall off & cling to the Plasterboard nail/screw heads. Thus confirming where the Studs are behind the Plasterboard👍👍

Attachment Deleted. Great idea with the wire wool! I can see it working too! One of the members a few year back came up with this beauty, similar to the wire wool, a simple magnet to find your studs works every time!..

Maybe some steel wool is more magnetised than others? Maybe it has to be new. Did you use an old rusty scrap piece? I'm sure Dick will be on to explain.

Good point Cinders, I'll try shredding some and put the shredded bits in a metal tin and, put a magnet on the tin, the shreds will pick up the magnetic shreds and hopefully that will work, get back to ya's all laters,

I've tried again today to make this work, I cut steelwool ( good clean stuff) with a pair of scissors , dead fine into a tin box with powerful magnets attached, the fine bits of steel went straight to the magnets, then i threw the bits of wool at a plasterboard with screws fixing some timber but, the bits of wool fell straight to the floor, a complete failure, I'm going to have to mark this down as a myth Buster and, proven,,,,,,,,,unless you can redeem it as a void judgment, Until such time you are still on full pay at the same rank and entitled to the usual fringe benefits and exp's, But, Stay in the country your passport is hereby suspended,

In a usual week I change 5-6 sets of tap cartridges and one particular tap has always been a pain in the arse. I don't have a pic of it but it's a budget looking mixer tap, deck type. I think it's from B and Poo due to the awkward fixings they used for a while there for their mixer taps. Anyway, the problem has been that I can get cartridges that fit the handle splines perfectly, but the length is always too short, that's talking about the cartridges you can get quickly for about a tenner or less a pair. What happens is that when the retaining screw is tightened it compresses the base of the handle against the tap body, I'm sure anyone who has replaced enough tap carts will know what I mean. Anyway - here's the solution: The splined part is a little under 8mm in diameter and the rest of that shaft is about 10mm, so M8 washers sit perfectly in the right place to act as a spacer to allow you to use standard tap carts, as they say - a picture paints a thousand words, so here's pics

Oh and a bag of 20 M8 washers at B and Poo is about £3.50, you can look at it as a rip off or a Brucie bonus that you find you must have accidentally put in your pocket during your trip round B and Poo
