I don’t agree the WB are crap. My last combi was in 17 years and only went wrong once & I used the WB fixed price fix. Can’t complain about the service. Everything was good. I moved out of the house 2 years ago so I don’t know if things are still ok. I’m now running a WB heat only and it seems decent. Vaillant are probably the best make with the cheaper makes like glow worm behind WB. They’re like cars, buy a newish good make & it might be trouble from the start. Buy an old shitter and it might run forever. No one knows. Isn't it in the interests of the manufacturer for the boiler to fail needing expensive parts ? Maybe some manufacturers have a better reputation than others? It is but they don’t want them to be too shitty as no one will buy them

i phoned a local plumber he diagnosed over phone as wss busy. he said it would cost £350+. He said he is sure its a certain part/s but wouldnn't tell me what it is Of course he won’t If he tells you then you’ll buy the part & get someone else to fit it!!! Where do you live? The issue is that at this time of year boiler fixers are in high demand & they know it hence the charge You’ve got 2 choices Pay a local engineer & get it fixed asap Try to deal with WB and book it in but I bet it won’t be until next week If I had no heating or hot water in freezing temperatures I know what I’d do

what i don't uderstand is why wb are playing games.Surey serial numbers can fade why are they not listening to any sense They want to know so they know if the boiler has ever been registered with them. That way they know it’s been installed by a gas man and they also can tell it’s age. If it’s never been registered then they probably won’t touch it.

I’m pleased you’re making progress aj👍👍 it is a busy time of year.
I’d see what their engineer says, but a 13 year old WB boiler, with no service record is going to be a bit fucked!!
It always makes me chuckle, punters with brand new Beamers & Mercs sitting at their front door and a house with a boiler that’s a ‘shed’😂😂.......And it’s my fault I can’t get their 15 year old piece of shite up & running, when nobody has had the casing off it since it came out the box!!!
Golden Rule people; With condensing Boilers, FAGS annual service for the first 3-4 years, then full 26(9) strip down boiler service every year thereafter.
Most Combi boilers are complex, full of moving parts & electronics. 12 years is roughly the life expectancy of these appliances.

And what about reliability of a normal heat only condensing boiler? How much more efficient are they than my 20 year old Ideal RD1 ?

our industry is full of money makers aj, you are allowed to take the cover off as long as its not the combustion chamber but, if you are unsure, its best to play safe You need to ask friends and relations for recommendations of a good, honest tradesman ( very rare today ) but, there are some about, I think, A fixed price from either Boshe or British Gas is the way to go, That way, you have a quarantine, good luck mate,

AJ, just take the front cover off matey. Find the bloody serial number, put the front back on and let WB know the serial number. I’ve got an amplifier at home which tells me on the back “ No user serviceable parts inside, Refer all repairs to a qualified technician.” Never stopped me taking the cover off to spray contact cleaner on the volume/ tone controls. 😉😉

Dafty, the Ideal RDI is a Classic, but it was fitted by BG. These boilers have a Cast Iron heat exchanger & a fan on the POC/exhaust side of the heat exchanger. Due to the wasteful high temperatures of the flue gasses, the Fan is prone to fail. Replacing the Fan Bearings will sort a single speed Fan like this, very simple old technology.
So someone not GS registered, unlike my good self, would advise removing & refitting the Fan in the middle of Summer. Ensuring it’s easy repair in the middle of Winter. Also, have Fan Bearings to hand.
The small PCB can also be a problem on these, so having a re-con one of these would be advisable. Very inefficient boiler, but will run for ever!!
Yes, I’m off to service an Intergas Rapid I fitted in 2016, done a Poke n Print service every year up until now. But it gets its big one today!! Fantastic boilers, only 4 moving parts & 100’s of other redeeming features👍👍👍

Something like two of these ? : www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163354907676I have in the past also had trouble with one or two of the temperature probes (thermistors?) - think I bought new ones.
